New skills equal active brains

I have seen that human brains are pretty funny. Unlike all the other stuff, brains get better and sharper the more you use them. Sometimes, we write-from-home folks degenerate with repeated assignments, same jobs and abundant coffee. This happened to me too.  Around a year back, I was a retainer for two organizations. They paid me well but the work was repeatedly same and boring.  The joy of creating unique pieces started escaping me and the job became mechanical. In spite of all I do, I constantly churn out a few poems and stories. However, slowly, I started finding it tough to spot the words and shape the stories. Only then, I realized my brain has not been very active the last few months and I need a jolt to get back in shape.

I took up oil painting and viola- it was just the answer I was looking for. As I used my creative juices for creating amateur master pieces, more and more of these creative juices were squeezing into my writing too.  And suddenly, in a span of few months, two of my short stories were published. I was elated.

Of course, the time I spent on oil painting reduced my earnings in one of the companies. But, my published pieces compensated me a little.

It all depends on what is your ultimate goal-to become a published writer or earn a stable writing income. Even if the latter is your goal, you can still keep your brain active by taking on various small assignments instead of one big one. This way, you will not get bankrupt if this one company shuts down or chucks you out. Variety is the essence of life. The more you squeeze out your brain, the better it gets.

Happy squeezing!
